Graphical application for clinical trial design in oncohematology
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a dangerous procedure with many possible complications, so it is reserved for patients with cancers of the blood or bone marrow. The recipient's immune system is usually destroyed with radiation or chemotherapy before the transplantation. The major complications of HSCT are infections and graft-versus-host disease. Such transplantation is relatively common in R.M. Gorbacheva Memorial Research Institute of Oncology, Hematology and Transplantation in 2015. It is very important to proceed patients through HSCT and after it with care and under full control.
Clinical trials are important for understanding the best way to perform treatment and conditioning regimen. But graphical applications for such trials are not included in medical systems and databases. So, physicians are forced to use different programs and packages and this is often difficult for them and ineffective.
To help oncology therapists, a graphical application for clinical trial design was created. It allows physicians to focus on providing an efficient treatment and do less paperwork by comprising all data acquisition and processing steps of typical clinical trial. This application is written on R using Shiny framework for deployment in local network and building graphical interface. It is multifunctional and easy to use. It provides clinical journal, trial reports, automatic calculation of necessary statistical parameters: sample size depending on the request, size of the control sample, duration of follow-up. User has a choice of an optimal statistical tool for analysis, depending on the nature of the data.
